Mysteries of the Hammond

on BBC Radio 3

The Hammond organ, first marketed in 1935, is a most misunderstood instrument, more likely to be associated with skating rinks than jazz. In the first of four programmes, Ben Watson compares it to the pipe organ as played by Fats Waller , and shows what it is capable of in the hands of exponents such as Wild Bill Davis and Milt Buckner.
