Monmouth has been defeated at Sedgemoor and Noel Clement is anxious for the safety of his guardian, Mr. Wade, who supported the rebellion. At last by night Mr Wade returns, wounded, and retires to a secret chamber to hide. Meanwhile Montague Dace, a distant cousin and an unpleasant character, has arrived at the house, and he discloses the secret room to the Royalists. Mr. Wade, Nod. and his friend Tom Alford fight for their lives.
