in c MARKHEIM '
A Play adapted by URSULA BRANSTON
From the Story by ROBERT Louis STEVENSON
Produced by H. HODGSON BENTLEY
Robert Louis Stevenson 's masterly handling of the macabre pis best known through Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Markheim, a short play adapted from this story, presents the drama of conflicting elements in the soul of Markheim. It is a version of the well-known Faust theme, in which good intentions and evil deeds struggle for supremacy in the soul of man. Markheim murders an old antique-dealer for his:money. and the spirit of evil offers him an easy way of release, by way of yet more crimes. He finds his solution and the play its clever surprise ending in one decisive act of will. It is gripping dramatic stuff, with plenty of atmosphere, and should appeal to those who like their dramatic entertainment in strong form. Markheim was performed with great success in the National programme last July.
