Is a sentence meaningful or not? Philosophers have made us familiar with that kind of question. But recent work with computers has suggested a possible new way of approaching the question of meaning in language. And ironically, the machines seem to work better than some philosophers with the fuzzy kind of experience which meaningful speech is for most people.
