Years of research in the state archives of France and tn the log-books of British men-o'-war brought to light many exciting new stories about the Jacobite rising of 1745. John Gibson 's book proved that the command of the sea by ships of the Royal Navy first of all starved out the forces led by Bonnie Prince Charlie and finally prevented his escape for months in spite of many daring exploits by the small ships financed by Franco-Irish Jacobites
