Seven gold medals were at stake in athletics with an anticipated clash between Britain's Roger Black and Du'aine Ladejo and America's Michael Johnson in the men's 400m. In the men's long jump, America's Carl Lewis was looking for a fourth consecutive gold, while Britain's Olympic champion Sally Gunnell was in action in the 400m hurdles semi-finals, hoping to improve on her Olympic best of 53.23 seconds set at Barcelona.
Five gymnastics gold medals were also decided overnight, as well as titles in diving and weightlifting. Introduced by Gary Lineker and Hazel Irvine.
