Omnibus: Paul Klee: The Heart of Creation

on BBC One London

Paul Klee, German painter, born in Switzerland, branded by the Nazis as 'degenerate,' and forced into exile in 1933: Klee is without doubt one of the greatest artists of our time. He is also one of the most popular: his pictures of cats, fishes, moons and child- like figures sell as reproductions all over the world.
He is loved for his wit and his humour, and yet his life is hardly known. He revealed himself most clearly when he delivered a talk about modern art in 1924 and this film looks back through those words at his life, his paint- ing and his music - Klee was a brilliant violinist as well as a painter.
It asks the big question: Why does the modern artist paint a world different from the one we see and what actually happens at what Klee called 'the heart of creation'?
With the painter's son Felix Klee
(Friday. 9.0 pm BBC2: Pablo Picasso)
