John Wilkinson , the self-styled ' ironmaster ', with whom this play deals, is a remarkable figure in industrial history. He launched the first iron ship a century and a half ago, and was also responsible for the building of the first iron bridge, which is now to be seen in Shropshire. The scene of the play lies in the Cartmel district and later in Brymbo, Staffordshire.
