Sung by DALE SMITH
Wir wandelten (Wo wandered)
Auf dem Kirchhofe (In the Churchyard)
Immor leiser wird mom. Schlummer (Ever gentler grows my slumber)
THE poem of We watulered, by Daumor, is a loving recollection of perfect happiness in listening to the voice of a dear companion. The music typifies Brahms' gift of writing melodiously in phrases that flow and glow with fine character.
If any composer had an aptitude for writing pictorial music, the poem of In the Churchyard (by Liliencron) would surely bring it into action : ' The day went out in rain and storm. I lingered by many a forgotten grave, amid weather-beaten stones on which I could scarcely read the names.'
Tho third is one of the favourites among
Brahms' songs. Its mood of drowsiness and restrained passion gives beauty to the lament of one who is dying heartbroken.
