A Tenor Sang

on BBC Radio 2

The second of three programmes with Robin Gregory featuring singers who have some "special extra" which lifts them out of the commonplace with stories worth airing. Joseph Schmidt :
The Invisible Tenor
As a Jew, Joseph Schmidt fell foul of the Nazi propaganda machine and was hounded out of his native Germany where he made his name. A tour of America where, because he was under five feet tall, he was billed as "the pocket Caruso", and a restless existence moving from one home to another led to his early death at the age of 38. However, advanced recording techniques in Germany preserved Schmidt's powerful voice for future generations.
