BBC Proms 97

on BBC Radio 3

One of Europe's most distinguished orchestras comes to the Proms and the Royal Albert Hall. Mendelssohn wrote his famous Violin Concerto for the leader of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and he also conducted the orchestra in the first performance of Schubert's grandest symphony. Henze's second Sonata for Strings is a recent tribute to the athletic Leipzig strings.
