As Professor of Pathology at Oxford. Lord Florey led the research team who in 1940 obtained penicillin in concentrated form, and first demonstrated its efficacy in animals and man. An Australian by birth, he was largely responsible for the foundation of the National University at Canberra, and brought his vigorous personality to bear as President of the Royal Society, and Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford
