It was the Sleeping Beauty, of course, who slept in the castle in the wood, but everyone in the castle, everything in the enchanted wood slept too. It is a potent myth: has not every human, the speaker asks, somewhere in the mind such a dense wood where absent lovers, distant battles, unwelcome news and views are conveniently left to sleep?
