Performance on 3: The Creation

on BBC Radio 3

Live From Westminster Abbey.
Haydn The Creation
From the outset, Haydn intended his oratorio on God's creation of the earth to be the crowning achievement of his life's work. "Never was I so religious as during the composition of The Creation," he said. "Daily I fell on my knees and asked God for strength." Two hundred years after the work's first performance, it is still regarded as one of his most inspired works.
