For 55 days the British, French and German Legations were under constant attack by the fanatical Boxers - the Chinese anti-foreign secret society. Sixty-six people were killed in all. Looting on a big scale took place when the victorious foreign troops entered the capital, and the Dowager Empress had to flee her vandalised palace.
