The fourth of 13 programmes from the 1996 season at London's Royal Albert Hall features a cosmopolitan group of young players drawn from around Europe. Their concert included Strauss's dramatic portrait of a hero, Elgar's deftly drawn characterisations of his friends "pictured within", and a vast Nordic tone-picture in a symphony by Sibelius - a composer whose work Colin Davis has widely performed in recent years.
