Heedless of mountainous seas and worsening weather, the passengers aboard the huge liner Poseidon celebrate New Year's Eve in traditional fashion until their festivities are literally turned upside-down. A freak wave has capsized the ship and for the small band of survivors of the initial disaster, the question is - can they escape from the floating death trap before it sinks to the bottom of the sea?
