Haydn Wood began his career as a professional violinist of no mean ability, and as a composer of serious concert music. He then discovered that he had a gift for composing ballad songs and therefore decided to devote himself entirely to this branch of composition, with the result that all the world knows.
Among Haydn Wood 's serious works, all of which show a mastery of handling the larger musical forms and a charming and fertile melodic invention are Piano and Violin Concertos, concert overtures, suites, and tone poems. His Manx Overture ' The Isle of Mountains and Glens ' was the outcome of his long association with the Isle of Man. The themes, however, are original and not folk tunes, although Haydn Wood has endeavoured to give them a Manx flavour. The work is dedicated to His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man, Sir Montagu Butler.
