When John Osborne 's play opened at the Royal Court Theatre. London on 8 May 1956, it brought - through its setting, the manner in which it explored human relationships, and in particular through the invective of its leading character, Jimmy Porter - a new form of realism to the British stage. The setting is the Porters' one-roomed attic flat in a large Midland town, 1956.
