This week saw the start of the 1997 Aldeburgh Festival, founded by Benjamin Britten , Peter Pears and Eric Crozier 50 years ago. Humphrey Carpenter looks back at the history of the festival, its developments and achievements, and considers how much the spirit of today's festival is true to the ideas of its founders.
