A Tradition of Sympathy

on BBC Radio 4 FM

The second of five programmes eavesdropping on the wards, clinics and corridors of London's Middlesex Hospital.
'The young doctor has to be told the basic scientific facts about human illness and how to deal with them ... but that's only a very small part of what being a doctor means.'
On the surgical ward is a gentleman who has undergone an amputation. In the Intensive Care Unit lies a patient, apparently unconscious, her breathing taken over by machine. Both must be treated as people, not just as medical problems.
