' All I'm saying is that in the village they have to work together as a mutual help society. Leprosy is a horrible disease, but it does not make people totally incapable. The only way to really help them is to encourage them to overcome their handicaps. It does them no good to let them sit around in a hospital all day, feeling sorry for themselves. How would you rather spend the rest of your life? Imprisoned in an institution, your every movement and action governed by rules devised for administrative convenience, or in an ordinary self-regulating community ...? '
