on BBC Home Service Basic

View in Radio Times

Written by Alistair Cooke , and directed by Charles Schenck , Jr. Programme produced in the BBC's New York office and broadcast by Transatlantic radio link
Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson — President of the United States and founder of the Democratic Party. Ceremonies in celebration of the event are being held in cities all over the United States, including, notably, his home-town, Charlottesville, Virginia. In Washington, D.C., the Federal Capital, a memorial to Jefferson will be unveiled, comparable in scale and dignity only with the two other national memorials to great Presidents in that city, those in honour of Washington and Lincoln.
