The Great Stars: The Glass Menagerie

on BBC One London

The Great Stars of yesterday and today in a season of their most memorable films
[Starring] Jane Wyman, Kirk Douglas
with Gertrude Lawrence, Arthur Kennedy

A middle-aged wife long since deserted by her husband is determined to achieve stability for her happy-go-lucky son and crippled daughter.
The apartment featured in the screen version of Tennessee Williams's play is an exact replica of the one in St. Louis where the author struggled to make his name as a writer. The play might also be autobiographical in other respects: his own sister made a collection of glass animals to make their dowdy flat seem more attractive.
