Narrator Alexander John In 1838 the proud British Army of the Indus invaded Afghanistan to 'counteract the progress of Russian influence' in that country. Three years later a desperate remnant of that army began a retreat through the icy passes which became a massacre. It was 'the most complete and disastrous overthrow that our army ever suffered in India'.
