In 1938 Prokofiev began his collaboration with the great Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein. They produced two major works for the early sound cinema,
Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible. Gerard McBurney considers the influence of Eisenstein on the composer's later dramatic music.
