THE MUSIC OF THE ETHIOPIAN COPTIC CHURCH

on BBC Radio 3

by JEAN JENKINS
Christianity came to Ethiopia soon after the Crucifixion and the rites of the Coptic Church have undergone little change during its history. Its services. therefore, offer a unique glimpse of music from the dawn of the Christian era. A few years ago Jean Jenkins visited Ethiopia and recorded for the first time a complete Christmas service. In this programme she describes the service and introduces excerpts from her recordings.
