Richard Strauss : The Hero's Works of Peace
. Programme music is a derogatory definition in the mouths of those who have no ideas of their own. (STRAUSS, 1929) Six of Strauss's ten tone-poems were written during the decade 1887-97, and quotations from each are to be found in the Hero's Works of Peace section of Ein Heldenlebcn. written immediately after the last of the group. These works, and the two songs also quoted, form this weeks programmes.
