Sunday Feature: Riches from Freetown

on BBC Radio 3

Kwame Kwei Armah makes an emotional journey through Freetown, in Sierra Leone, to discover how the slave trade has influenced a generation of writers and if the memory of slavery is still alive in a country that has passed through colonial independence and bloody civil war. A descendant of the slave trade himself, Kwame explores how art is being used to emancipate the modern Sierra Leonean of a history written by a "white hand", in an effort to reclaim an African identity denied to many by the very creation of Freetown itself.
