A recorded account of the strange and ancient ceremony of the election of Almshouse Wardens
A programme devised and presented by Sheldon Williams
Let the word ' races ' mislead no listeners into thinking that this is a programme about some sporting event. The broadcast is in fact about a little-known ceremony, which'has been recorded by one of .the BBC's mobile units in the North-East.
The way the wardens are elected is both unusual and interesting ; the ' races' start in the church vestry and finish m the village school.
Sheldon Williams , who has arranged the broadcast, is a member of the BBC's North Regional staff at Newcastle-on-Tyne. He is the' producer of that popular feature ' Stagshaw Searchlight '.
