Thanks to his lifelong friend Rachmaninov, Medtnerwas persuaded to travel to the USA to give concert tours and continue his search for an audience for his music. His works may not have received the praise he sought but his piano playing was highly regarded. Today Donald Macleod introduces a piano sonata written at a time of great financial hardship, and the highly emotional Epica violin sonata, which became a monumentto Medtner's brother
