The Pioneer Trail
Robert Robinson retraces one of the world's great journeys - the Pioneer Trail west across the USA. He follows the route of the Mormons, who were expelled from their Illinois township on the Mississippi River in 1846 and who set out across the high plains, over the Rocky Mountains to found a city in the desert of the Great Salt Lake.
ROBINSON, too, starts on the Mississippi, meets CHIEF LINDY WHITE -CALF, discovers ' the Bison Wallow-burger ', visits a ranch on the Oregon trail, samples ' early risers' at Fort Laramie, meets the Wyoming Rodeo Queen and gets down from his covered wagon only to be done for speeding.
And he explores the mystery which made men sell all they possessed to set out on this trail to the deserts of uncertainty: a mystery which makes this the journey of journeys, not just a road between two places but a pathway through the imagination.'
