Rembrandt's late masterpiece is the starting point forthis contemporary drama reflecting the painting's themes. Built around an extensive interview with Joanna Woodall , deputy director of the Courtauld Institute, the drama follows Michael, a British diplomat, as he visits his dying father in St Petersburg, where the painting hangs. Through a dialogue with his Russian guide, Natasha,
Michael comes to an understanding about his own relationship with his father, and his father's relationship with the city of his birth.
