John Cherrington reports from Israel
'We do not have problems, only challenges' is typical of the Israelis' attitude to life, and the fact that tomatoes, gladioli, peppers, and sugar beet grow in abundance in the middle of the desert is proof of their skill and determination.
It is a country of new ideas and of change. Techniques and crops are changing to supply new markets and this is having some effect on the structure of the Kibbutzim and Moshavim that were so important in the establishment of the State.
Agriculture in Israel has political, social, and military importance as well as providing the superstructure of the economy.
