Wimbledon 1977: The Centenary Championships
In 1877 Spencer Gore won the first Men's Singles title in the All England Championships and earned himself a trophy valued at 25 guineas, a not unacceptable gift in those halcyon Victorian days. One hundred years later the gladiators of the modern international tennis circuit jetted into London to do battle for the most highly regarded honour in the game, and a share of the mouth-watering financial rewards - over £218,000 in prize money. The winner alone of the Men's Singles Championship will receive £15,000 - a fact that will not be lost to young Bjorn Borg as he emerges on to the hallowed Centre Court to begin the defence of his title this afternoon.
But first this unique day in the history of the All England Club will be marked by the presence of HRH The Duke of Kent who before the start of play will present commemorative medals to past Singles Champions. Outside broadcast cameras will capture the nostalgia of this simple ceremony as Jean Borotra and Mrs L.A. Godfree, who won their first Singles titles back in 1924, lead a parade of Wimbledon's former heroes on to the Centre Court.
Introduced by Harry Carpenter
Commentators DAN MASKELL, PETER WEST, JOHN BARRETT and BILL THRELFALL
