An anthology of the Spanish Civil War
1936-1939
Compiled with a commentary by J. M. COHEN
In July 1936, when the Generals' revolt broke out, very few writers, intellectuals, and politicians outside Spain were interested in the country's affairs. Spanish writers themselves remained aloof from actuality. Within a few weeks the intellectual world was committed, principally on the side of the Republic. This programme pursues the course of the war as reflected in the writings in prose and verse of those whose island-privacy was broken by the bitter struggle which ended twenty-five years ago.
