in a programme on his life written by MAURICE CRANSTON Narrated by Nigel Anthony
The fame of Voltaire, who died 200 years ago this week, is based more on what he was than on what he wrote. A man of letters, a personality who captured the attention of people all over the western world, he did much to alter their attitude to life. An amusing, sprightly, skinny man, he organised campaigns on behalf of the victims of persecution and filled his own house with refugees. He took risks, both as writer and public figure.
