The Kathleen Merritt Orchestra
(Leader, Colin Sauer )
Conductor, Kathleen Merritt
(Continued in next column)
Grace Williams' Suite is based on her incidental music for Henry Treece's verse-drama The Dark Island, broadcast in the Third Programme in 1948. Its theme is Celtic Britain as it was before, during, and after the Roman invasions.
It was at a Serenade Concert at
Hampton Court last July that John Addison's Trumpet Concerto was played for the first time; the artists were David Mason and the New London Orchestra under Alec Sherman. Addison, who is now thirty, won the Sullivan Prize at the R.C.M.; served for six years in the Army; and has written music for several films.
R. W. Wood, who is both a composer and a writer on music, was born in 1902. His Suite for small orchestra was written eleven years ago. Harold Rutland
