The first of three films about the Chinese countryside Small Happiness
'A baby boy is a big happiness, a baby girl is a small happiness.' Life in the Chinese countryside has changed enormously in 40 years, but some attitudes die hard.
In this unusual film, made by Carma Hinton , an American who was brought up in China, the women of a small village talk unrestrainedly about love and marriage, husbands and mothers-in-law, babies and childbearing. And the grandmothers describe the bad old days: child marriages, foot-binding, servitude.... Seldom has a film got as close to the ordinary women of China - and there are 400 million of them!
