The documentary series offering an insight into the real world of intensive care at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Jim, the builder who has spent two weeks in the unit after falling 20 feet from a ladder, is unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator. Consultants Paddy Yeoman and Andy Hutchinson must decide whether to continue treatment or allow him to die. The newest admission, 24-year-old Ian, is critically ill after falling 25 feet and landing on his head. A large clot has been removed from his brain, but the neurosurgeon must explain to Ian's parents that even with the best and latest technology, there is a limit to what can be done.

Tonight's programme addresses the problems faced by doctors and relatives who have to make life and death decisions of behalf of patients.
