Nihonjinron

on BBC Radio 3

The Japanese are much given to speculating about their national identity - hence ' Nihonjinron ', a compound word meaning ' theories about the Japanese'. In the rapid and intense modernisation which followed contact with the western world, especially after 1945, many Japanese feel they have lost their bearings. They cannot go back to the old ways: but where are the new ones leading them?
