on BBC Radio 3

With Joan Bakewell. Richard Bonynge 's conducting career began in 1962 when, at the last minute and with no formal training, he stood in for a sick colleague. But even before the big break, he was already making his mark on the musical world as vocal coach to his wife, Joan Sutherland.
Today, he talks to Joan Bakewell about his earliest days as a young pianist in Australia and reveals why he gave up the piano to concentrate on the world of opera. Producer Kerry Chapman
