Writing is the most powerful and meaningful of the Russian arts. In a country with a long tradition of political censorship, literature has always been in the forefront of the battles with authority. Pushkin,
Lermontov, Dostoevsky and many others were either imprisoned or exiled in their pursuit of the truth.
Since the Revolution the task of their successors has been even tougher. Yet, despite this, the tradition of writer as hero has continued to flourish in the Soviet Union - a major influence in the thaw in society that they call glasnost. Photography
