Factory Records was the label you had to be on. In the 80s it was Manchester, with its style, music and culture, which led the way - London, Europe and beyond followed. But
Factory has just gone bust, and Manchester has beendeclared dead. Was
"Madchester" simply a fad, or was it just one manifestation of a city alive with creativity?
Quentin Cooper decided it was time to take a closer look.
