Busoni’s set of waltzes, his last purely orchestral work, was written in 1920 and dedicated to the memory of Johann Strauss, Lt was suggested by the accidental hearing of a Strauss waltz at the door of a cafe. Professor Dent, in his book on the composer, tells us that the waltzes were actually studies for the ballet music, in Busoni's opera, Doktor Faust, where they form part of the Duke of Parma's wedding festivities.
