Composer of the Week: Mendelssohn

on BBC Radio 3

5: The Final Years
Mendelssohn was a leader in making music central to the cultural life of the newly unified German nation. He believed strongly that music-making was for everyone, which is perhaps why his music was sneered at as beinggood only for amateurs. Furthermore, he loved the British amateur choral tradition and wrote his oratorios for Birmingham.
