A History of Men in Battle
Presented by Frederick Forsyth Infantry
This programme is about the pawn of warfare, the infantryman. At once essential and expendable, it is the infantryman who seizes and holds ground. The infantry soldier's role has always centred on the use of the individual weapon. The fact that he fights on foot, and for most of history has moved between battles on foot, has given war for him a personal dimension often not shared by the troops of other arms. For the infantryman, the essence of war has been to close with and to kill the enemy with an individual weapon - at the mercy of the elements and over all sorts of ground.
