American scientist Michael Armstrong suddenly leaves a nuclear conference he is attending in Copenhagen and flies to East Berlin. Refusing to believe that he has defected, his fiancee and colleague Sarah Sherman follows him across the Iron Curtain, not realising that her actions will put Armstrong in danger.
