Sue Lawley and Nicholas Witchell present the first edition of The Six O'Clock News - 30 minutes of the latest pictures, stories and events of the day from Britain and the world. From around the United Kingdom, the BBC's unique network of regional news centres will combine with the reporters and specialist correspondents in London to bring the Six O'Clock audience a comprehensive account of what is happening - and what it means.
Abroad, Martin Bell and Brian Barron in America, Tim Sebastian in Moscow, Keith Graves in the Middle East, Brian Hanrahan in the Far East and Michael Buerk in Africa lead the worldwide team of BBC correspondents who'll be bringing the latest foreign news. David Coss will report on politics, David Cass on sport and special assignment reporters Michael Cole, Gavin Esler, Clive Ferguson and Laurie Mayer will investigate stories behind the headlines. The Six O'Clock will harness the latest television technology - both in the field and in the studio - to give the early evening audience the fastest, clearest news service possible.
And also today the first of our nightly reports from the TUC in Brighton.
