As a boy of 16 he went to live in Leningrad, and stayed for 45 years In the Soviet Union. He worked in factories. discovered his vocation as an entertainer. experienced the War. the Stalin purges and the Cold War. In 1977 he returned to Britain and won a Pye and Society of Authors award for a radio talk about one of his adventures. In the second of four programmes, he reveals more Russian ways of circumventing bureaucracy.
